About Amelia
My Name is Amelia Lillian Evelyn Lea, I was born May 2009.
I was born with the Umbilical Cord around my neck and developed seizures on the very first day of my life. I have Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (later known and recognised as Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation & Delays in Development) which is damage to cells in the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) from not having enough oxygen. I also have regular Seizures. |
I have 2 types of seizure... One makes me giggle and smile, the other Epileptic Seizure causes violent spasms in my body, they make my body jolt against its will, which hurts me and makes me cry with pain.
I cannot control my seizures and the medication which could calm them down could also make my sight worse or I could become permanently blind. |
When I was allowed home from the Hospital I had to have an NG tube
(Feeding Tube that goes up the nose, down the food pipe & Into My Tummy) as I could not bottle feed. After a few months it was removed (The tube is designed for short term feeding as it is very dangerous). After another few months I was taken in to hospital as I lost lots of weight and could not have bottle feeds. |
It came apparent to my mummy, daddy and doctor that I was unable to swallow and is something I cannot learn with my disability the way that it is now. I now have a Stomach Peg as this is much more safe and discrete than the NG tube in the nose. My Doctor says my progress has been very slow, he told my Mummy I have Poor Vision and Severe Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy & Microcephaly (My head is Smaller than Normal) I like to go to the Ellerslie centre on a regular basis, they help me and my mummy learn new things that will help me such as sensory routines. |
